Max Pack Charging Speeds

Curious what others are seeing in terms of charging speed. Seems like my max pack is not charging as fast or as consistently as my lightning. Only got 150kw max even starting at 26% SOC even though I set the charger as my destination so I would think it would have precondition the battery if it needed it. Tapered to about 100kw by the time I unplugged it at 66% SOC. FYI this was at an EA 350kw charger.

Try a different charger. Most likely the charger couldn't go faster than that, even know rated at 350kW. Could be several explanations (power sharing, charger problem, etc) but most likely nothing to do with your truck.

Tapering to 100kW as you approach 70% SOC is normal but you should peak out around 220kW.

Thanks I’ll give another stall next time I fast charge. Any idea on how to determine if the truck is actually preconditioning the battery? My tesla would display a message about preconditioning in process but I don’t think I saw any messages on the rivian.

It will tell you on the nav screen and also in the alert menu at the top of the screen. You can also check the battery temperature from the gauge screen, if it's around 70 it won't precondition.

In order to see a precondition battery message, you need to have the destination set to a fast charger...and then it'll only precondition it as necessary. When it's hot out, I've seen it precondition for about an hour. I've also seen it precondition for 5-10 minutes.

I'd also try several charge sessions before getting worried. Those EA chargers always say "up to ___kWh" and it's not guaranteed you'll get it based on many factors already mentioned above. I've seen my truck top out at the 220kWh on a 350 charger (which is the truck max) and I've also seen it top out at 170kWh on a 150 EA charger. I've also seen the truck say "charge speed reduced by charger" as well.

I chalk it up to some days I get a faster fast charger, and some days I get one that just wants me to hang out in the parking lot a lil bit more.

My first supercharging experience was at Tesla magic dock station on a cold day and the battery hadn’t preconditioned. I only saw around 125KW peak and it took 50 minutes to deliver 43kWH. More recently I was able to use a RAN charger for the first time up in Newburgh, NY. Battery pre-conditioned properly on the way and I saw a peak speed of 209.73KW. Overall 76 kWh added over 28 minutes (charging to 75%) which was impressive. Last week I had a similar experience at a Chargepoint up in Kennebunk, ME where the truck preconditioned for about 15 minutes prior to arriving and the charger gave me just over 200KW max and 50kWH in 19 minutes to 75%.

Say no more. EA is the problem. They suck so damn much. I haven't had ONE single proper experience there. This weekend was punctuated by multiple failures at EA, and having to backtrack to Tesla chargers. A huge reason why I wouldn't buy anything other than a Tesla for a long time, and still recommend them over any other.

Doesn't it take more energy to precondition? I've noticed my range drop when the preconditioning starts. Going for a hour seems like a big chunk of energy to spend.

Also EV charger stalls share loads, usually one main cabinet will supply two chargers. If there’s another vehicle using the same cabinet (not charger) they power delivery will be reduced.

They are typically the chargers next to each other.

I read in one of the Facebook groups that there is a firmware issue with the max pack models that is preventing the vehicle from preconditioning. Hopefully a software update is forthcoming soon.

Just tried another EA 350kw charger and got about the same speeds. Set navigation to charger but did not see any indications of preconditioning. Truck indicated battery temp of 78 so probably already at ideal temps. Max charging speed was about 154kw when charging from 31%. Tapered to about 126kw at 45%. Hoping there is an update for charging speeds on the max pack. This is pretty bad charging performance. My Lightning held at 150kw up to about 80% pretty consistently. Even my model 3 can hit 250kw vs the 150ish kw I’m getting on the max pack.

Thanks for this data point. You got about 60kwh whereas I only got about 47kwh in about the same amount of charging time and I started at a lower state of charge so should have gotten higher speed than you. I will add this to my trouble ticket since I’m bringing the truck in for other issues in a few weeks.

Ugh. Most EA stations work just fine. Spreading FUD isn’t helping anything.
