Question on charging at Tesla superchargers

Yeah I know, don't have to go wild here. I have that adapter because it would come overnight for a trip I had planned the next day (even though I didn't end up needing it and made it the whole way). I couldn't care less about it breaking, or the $, or the car...my only concern I agree with is safety fire etc. So on the note yeah I don't choose to use cheap stuff. This was a situation where whatever gets here first that will work with superchargers is the one I'm getting thing.

The only caution is that Rivian will not warranty repairs if you use an "unapproved" adapter, which means, strictly-speaking, the one mfg by Tesla and sold/given by Rivian.

I don't think any of us have seen the one you posted, so it's an unknown. May be great quality, who knows. But the Typhoon Pro and Rivian adapters are known entities, and only the Rivian one is actually "approved" for use at a Tesla SC.

Tesla does not open new chargers to other evs for at least 2 weeks to 1 month +

The other thing is non-tesla access to superchargers is only 58% of stations. It's less stations than people realize

It is a pretty critical difference where some large superchargers are tesla exclusive.

let's say you take a non-tesla EV to coachella. Your only tesla option is an 8 stall supercharger, while tesla have access to a 46 stall one in the same city.

Okay, so question - fair to say as a Rivian owner, we should just stick to the approved Rivian charging locations that come up on the center screen?

The difference in $$$ is so small it seems silly not to go with the Tesla mfg‘d one. While waiting for my R2 I leased an Equinox EV and purchased the GM adaptor from them to avoid problems down the line. The Equinox is pretty nice, but I’m really looking forward to the tri motor, nearly 10” of ground clearance, etc.

You can use www.tesla.com/nacs for a map that shows definitively which superchargers are open to other manufacturers. The last time I had the "starting" message, and it didn't start, and it was a supported charger, I had to go the Tesla app and start it.

Well that answers that question. I checked "Open to other EVS" and "Open to NACs partners" and even in Los Angeles it is pretty limited and as you suggested does not include the giant 30 stall one down the street from me. Interesting. Thanks for that

Because that area had a very early/fast EV deployment, the chargers are older.

As to the AC adapter, I just picked up whatever was on Amazon for $50 with good reviews, it's fine. It's just a connector, no intelligence.

Looks like there are a fair number of chargers available and compatible in the LA area based on the Rivian app. I filtered for only Level 3 and only Tesla and Rivian chargers. Each of the green dots is a compatible charger. They don’t all show the thee lightning bolts just because of screen size. If you zoom in, every green dots becomes a 3-bolt station as well. You do have to filter in the vehicle nav system to include Tesla superchargers as well. If you add ElectrifyAmerica, EVGo, and other vendor options, LA is overflowing with DC Fast chargers compatible with Rivian.

For the drive Las Vegas, you would only need to charge once (maybe twice based on battery pack).

And once in LV, there are lots of options again…

Hi guys - I know this has been asked but I can't find this specific question/answer, so yell at me if you'd like but anyway (long time car forum user here)...I charge at home but for some long trips I want be able to use Tesla's superchargers. So I bought this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0DHCQYSCM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_image?ie=UTF8&psc=1 which connects fine when I get to the supercharger, but it sits there spinning saying "Starting" and never starts. From what I researched it is because the Rivian app doesn't know what you're doing (These superchargers do not come up on the map for Rivian) and Tesla doesn't think you have a tesla? So I opened the Tesla app to set it up, and as you likely know if you choose that you have a Rivian, it also does not recognize these chargers as usable on Tesla's map. So my thought was to just tell the Tesla app that you have a Tesla so that they DO appear on the map so that you can start the charging process, but it won't let you choose Tesla as your EV since I assume you aren't paired with an actual Tesla. So within the Tesla app, the map doesn't show these chargers either. So from this mess of a description, my question is basically, is it stuck on "starting" because there is nothing attached billing wise since it is not recognized by either Rivian or Tesla app as being at a compatible spot? If so, how are you guys actually using these superchargers?

In certain areas, I have found PlugShare to include compatible chargers (DCFC and LVL 2) that do not show up on the Rivian app or center screen. If planning a trip - or in a remote spot - I'll cross reference with PlugShare to ensure a comprehensive listing.

Plug share does find hidden gems, off network chargers etc. I found a decent (and free) DCFC at a car dealer in Buffalo when I went to a Bills game2 years ago. For going places, such as to visit family 500 miles away I let Rivian guide me, but once I get there if I don't have a great convenient option that's where I always check plug share (but I have also been sent on many goose chases as well - the downside of crowdsourcing information)

No. Tesla does not open new chargers to other EVs for around 1 month and they also have a ton of tesla exclusive chargers around LA. It seems like tesla only open up 1 charger in a some areas for other EVs that are in high demand while keeping a lot of them tesla exclusive.

only 80% of v3/v4 are open to other EVs and southern california it feels like 60% of v3/v4 are open
